The April 2005 Update
The Management Committee spent time wrapping up a very successful Annual Gathering, and making arrangements for next session. Venues and dates were selected, for the various events to go into the new syllabus. Late news regarding the closing of The Henry Wood Hall means that we will need a new site for next years Gathering. The GIA Closing Concert was held on Friday 8th April in St Columba’s Hall. Our Chairman for the evening was John MacNeil. John was born in the village of Gearnannan, near Carloway on the West coast of Lewis, where the Black Houses have been restored. A busy retiree, Past President of The Lewis and Harris Association, actor, etc., etc., as well as introducing the artist, kept us amused with a fund of stories. The evening got off to a good start with a bagpipe selection from Piper James McLean. The singing for the evening was provided by Past President and Mod Medallist, Dugie Gillespie, Elspeth Howie, a member of The Largs Gaelic Choir, Iain McKinnon and a couple of songs by the President. The last two were seen in a photograph of the Glasgow Gaelic Musical Association’s Junior choir taken at the Aberdeen Mod in 1946!! The Committee members provided a substantial array of food, coffee and tea, which was enjoyed by all. This was the last official duty of Jean Rice before she and her husband Steve emigrate to Islay. We thank them for their hard work for the Association, and wish them well. After a cup of tea, “I don’t believe it” Norma “Sitting at my piano” Elspeth Howie James McLean and Dugie Gillespie Norma, Iain McKinnon, Elspeth Howie, and Dugie Gillespie. Alasdair |
