CURRENT WORK

The landscape of Islay, Inner Hebrides, Scotland.

Not only do the names of the hills and lochs and fields have the sound of something quite unfamiliar to a newcomer but the very light, texture colour and form is equally unfamiliar and exciting

Since moving to Islay, I have been working to assimilate aspects of landscape into my work, which had formerly been based on images of the human figure.

My work has always concentrated on colour and the paintings have often been supported or complemented by various mixed media pieces in which I explore the colour texture and line as it sometimes offers a freer means of expression.

The unfamiliar landscape named with unfamiliar words has a different light, mood and texture and needs a different language, a different accent - a different means of expression.

The images are concerned in some way with the local landscape.

They show some evidence of my need to resolve and assert my ideas and convey some of the many aspects of such a varied and changeable landscape.

Working with alternative materials can lead to a different way of thinking about subjects.
Colour and texture still relate to the landscape in this case without attempting to emulate the skills of the weaver or embroiderer or a direct representation of the particular scene or landscape.

This offers a degree of freedom which then is still in the mind when working in paint on canvas.
